Hi! I'm a writer, photographer, and birth doula from Durham, North Carolina. I do lots of things, and think a lot about how they fit together to help me understand the world. I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from American University, and my poems have appeared in national journals including Copper Nickel, Ecotone, Ninth Letter, and The Bellevue Literary Review. I also love to photograph humans and help bring babies into the world as a doula. My current project, "How You Got Here," explores maternity care, childbearing, and childhood around the world through writing, photography, and participant observation.
I trained as a doula through DONA International and the UNC-Hospitals Birth Partners Program in 2006, and immediately began supporting pregnant, laboring and postpartum families at homes, clinics, and hospitals in North Carolina, Washington DC, and Honduras. I believe that all birthing people deserve safe, compassionate care.
As a photographer, I love collaborating with my subjects to make vibrant portraits that shine with their personality, curiosity and relationships. I believe that babies photograph best in their parents’ arms, children photograph best at play, and everyone looks most beautiful surrounded by the people they love. My favorite thing in the world is to combine writing, photography, and doula work in new and exciting ways. Use the form below to say hello, or to suggest a cool collaboration!
