During my residency this past winter at The Island Institute in Sitka, Alaska, I loved watching the Institute crew use their in-house bindery to make books (including their awesome community anthologies) by hand. I also kind of learned how to do it, and discovered that I'm terrible at it. It was really fun, though, to photograph my bud, Peter Bradley, (The Institute's director) on the book-making grind. These photos also really show off the incredible January light in Alaska, which has a gauzy, almost pearly quality that I'd never seen before.
